MOVING FORWARD—THE FEEDBACK COMPONENT
A message from Cynthia Jiles, Assistant Executive Director Office of Human Resources
MESSAGE FROM HUMAN RESOURCES
As you know communication promotes understanding. It is the basis of deci- sion-making and planning, brings teams together, facilitates coordination, and brings people closer together. Feedback is a critical component of communi- cation. Vital in moving forward both in our professional and personal lives. Research shows that although necessary, feedback is grossly under-provided. Why do some supervisors find it difficult to give honest feedback? Almost to the point of avoidance? A prevailing reason is an unease to begin the conversation. Despite the fre- quency of providing thumbs-up or thumbs-down in social media, these pri- vate face-to-face communications are more personal. How do you tell “Bryan” he is woefully underperforming, or “Becca” that she did not perform the task as you asked? Some supervisors may not be certain where to begin or how to handle an up- set employee who does not respond well to constructive feedback. Another supervisor may be concerned that their employees will no longer “like” them. There are even supervisors who are reluctant because it creates additional work. Don’t just cross your fingers and hope annoying issues will just fix themselves. Start with the job description and the employee’s annual goal setting docu- mentation. These are living documents that serve as guidance to facilitate conversations and improvement plans. These should be referenced frequent- ly when assigning, reviewing and providing feedback on your employees’ workflow.

Why is honest feedback important? And how to provide honest feedback.
Honest feedback reduces errors and frustrations often caused by miscommu- nications. If our “Bryan”, previously mentioned, isn’t aware that he is under- performing, how will he know to improve ?
