WELLNESS STORIES The Journey to a Healthier Me!

Shamiko Allen

Greetings all!

M aintaining a healthy weight is something that many of us struggle to do. The key to obtaining your weight goal is to listen to your body. It has a strange way of letting you know exactly what it needs to function properly. Being that we were all created uniquely different, those needs will most likely look very different for each individual.

One thing that I came to realize is that being consistent in your exercise and diet is most important in achiev- ing your personal weight loss goals. You must remain active to help your body burn those unwanted calories that otherwise turns into fat. Initially, I struggled to find out what my body needed to boost my metabolism or the foods that made me feel sluggish, but when I began to listen to my body the weight started falling off. I want to share a little of what my journey to losing nearly forty pounds looks like. On average, I walked two or three miles six days a week and found that changing my walking pace yielded greater results. In addition to walking, my diet was another determining factor to losing the weight. I would eat well-balanced meals at least six days a week. Often times, we hear diet and naturally think hunger. I am here to tell you I was never hungry! If I consumed something that was high in calories, I walked more on those days. Eating sweets has always been my greatest weakness; therefore, I made the decision to replace sweets with fruits. Let me tell you, watermelon has been my saving grace! Find what works for you, and stick to it! Just know, your best motivation comes from the person you see staring at you in the mirror when you begin to shed those pounds. So, I can tell you that there is always a ray of hope no matter how dark the room is around you. Keep working toward being a healthier you!
