MELA Meeting Minutes 2003 - 2017

Captivate. This information will be ready for the fall. The association requested that there be both a faculty and student version of the orientation session.

VI. GUIDED DISCUSSION – “Professional Development.” When Terry, Tish, and Jenny were at Blackboard they were given several compliments about the development of training. This was a huge compliment to what we have done at MSVCC. We are now calling our online training program the MSVCC Academy. In this guided discussion forum, we would like to know what you require at your campuses. This will help with the development of training through the academy. The biggest benefit is that we are providing training at no costs to the schools. The training is asynchronous and includes course facilitators. Christian will be providing the pamphlet to the presidents at their next meeting. He would like to show them what some of the $15.00 assessment funds are going towards. What type of PD do you have on your campuses, what would you like to see offered, can you mandate professional development for your faculty? (1) Coahoma – no formal training, but does take information back from these meetings and provide with online instructors. He would like to mandate Early Warning, Wimba, and TEO (Teaching Effectively Online). This is mandated to complete by December. For traditional faculty, would like to develop something in house on how to use Bb for traditional courses. He does not have as much control over the eLearning component. He needs resources for traditional instructors. (2) CoLin – has no set training. The associate dean comes up with PD training schedule, but it is not mandated training. Teachers are required to take the six week TEO course to begin teaching. She likes the idea of using the tiered courses. (3) ECCC – have activity period on Tuesday/Thursdays and were conducting short Bb training sessions and required faculty to attend a certain number. He is also requiring the TEO, Wimba, EWS (Early warning System) as part of their teaching effectively. He also built two sessions himself on the gradebook and academy courses. He works with professional development. Adjuncts and new faculty members were offered three different three hour sessions and invited them to attend for hands-on instruction. Faculty are required to complete five out of seven sessions (this includes the Academy courses). (4) HINDS – full-time faculty/staff are required to attend a certain number of professional development trainings each year. Nothing is required at this time for adjunct. These are different types of training provided (Microsoft Word, Wimba, etc). They can use this credit in any training. For online faculty we offer several sessions on Wimba, Respondus, and Turnitin. This is typically handled by the technical/instructional design staff. They can require that online faculty attend two sessions per semester. Working on adding additional courses “online” for the away faculty. (5) HOLMES – is a lot like HINDS in that SACS requires a certain number of PD hours. Jenny and Elisabeth conduct these training sessions during the activity periods. They have been lucky with the fact that their faculty want to attend this type of training. They
