MELA Meeting Minutes 2003 - 2017

d. Standardized Syllabus – Audra Leverton. This past week at Hinds, they have begun adopting a standardized syllabus. They want to ensure they are on the same page as the MSVCC Syllabus. The MSVCC syllabus states that we have to have a list of outcome competencies and course objectives. They were under the impression that this was the same thing. Lilly said that that a lot of their instructors are posting both MSVCC and standardized syllabus. Martha Lou said that the push right now is the student learning outcomes (SLOs). Christian said that he said that it is some measure of what the student is able to do when they leave the course. Outcomes typically measure something very specific. Tish said that this should be changed in April. e. More than 3 proctored exams – LaMetrius Daniels. She has some science instructors that require five proctored exams because this is a four hour course. Tish told her that she will need to put this information in the comment section of the course. LaMetrius would like the policy to change from 1-3 to 1-5 and then the teachers can decide if they wish to require 3-5. If you are not following the current policy, you need to let the schools who are pulling in courses, that you require more than the standard. Right now most of our schools do not have spaces. Jennifer Powell stated that some schools are denying students after three exams per course. Dr. Jenkins said that some English instructors are also using “proctored exams” for writing assignments. Does anyone feel the need to make a motion to change? No one made a motion. Hubert will need to bring this up during the April meeting. Keri asked if we could still use that the Vice President can approve an additional proctored exam? Each school needs to check with their Vice President and Dean(s) to determine how they feel about allowing them to approve additional proctored exams. This should be added back to the April agenda.

Dr. McCrimon would like to bring up the situation where East Mississippi will not test outside students in the lab and makes them test in the hallway.

f. Students Auditing Online Courses – LaMetrius Daniels. Tish called Alicia about this and said that there was a policy in an old version of the policies and procedure guide said that no one is supposed to audit an online course. This is currently not listed in our policies and procedures. We may need to add this back to our manual.

g. Support Committee Chairperson – Audra Leverton. Audra has asked to step down as the chair of the support committee. The committee will make a decision on the next chair.
