MELA Meeting Minutes 2003 - 2017
i. E-mail Audra Kimble when you create a feature request. She can then send it out to the group for ELCs to send out to users/instructors to vote on. A suggestion was made that a Google Doc be created so that ELCs can post the feature request URLs and send them out to their faculty.
e. State Authorization
i. Debra West sent each college an e-mail to see if we had students in Minnesota or Wyoming. Students that we are delivering totally online courses to are the students we need to worry about. ii. Alabama is requiring a school template/spreadsheet of every online instructor, their credentials, their courses, their addresses, etc. (Note: Arkansas requires only a sample of 15.) Audra Kimble will send out this e-mail template as a FYI. Most of this information will come from other departments, so it will need to be sent to the VP level. This will have to be renewed every year or two until SERA (State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement) is approved. Audra is working to get this as an automated process with Institutional Effectiveness and Audit staff. Because everything is in the ET as a PDF, this is not the best method of retrieving information. 1. This is the day after the MAC Conference. Academic Deans will be meeting at the MAC Conference, and will discuss the MSVCC attendance policy that is up for vote. 2. Tish Stewart reminded ELCs about Academic Progress . Attendance and Grades are separate – if a student completes one activity in the course during the week, they should be counted PRESENT (just as a face-to-face course). However, if 5 out of 6 assignments weren’t complete, the zeros would be recorded. i. College student’s neglect of paying their bills has been a main topic. There is a push for financial literacy being taught in Orientation/Freshman Year Experience. There is also a push to offer payment plans. ii. Presidents are discussing developmental courses. 1. Edgenuity – a company selling online content for developmental courses presented. 2. Keri Cole stated that all colleges should be consistent with placement for developmental courses, and expressed that colleges need standardized placement. Tish Stewart stated that Deans are working on this. iii. Push for “C4 campaign” (complete four years). Big marketing campaign for all students. Presidents voted on participating in the C4 campaign – each campus will have committees. Students sign a commitment banner, etc. Push for completion, and for faculty being involved in helping students complete. iv. Approved to have 1 st Soccer All-Star Game. Holmes agreed to host it. The All-Star game will be on November 16 at Freedom Park in Ridgeland. v. MPB does a spotlight on Junior College athletics. MACJC will pay for this. Check into watching this program on television. vi. IRS Issues – not every school has been hit; however, some have been hit hard. Holmes, Jones, and PRCC have been hit. Tax Form 1099 which states tuition costs, is October Meeting i. Scheduled for Wednesday, October 23 at State Board Office in Jackson .
